Aromatherapy: How essential oils are good for your skin

Aromatherapy, the science of essential oils, is a valuable ally for enhancing the skin’s natural beauty . At Mary Cohr, the expert combination of these plant-based concentrates with in-salon treatments revitalizes, purifies, and soothes the skin. Discover how integrating aromatherapy into your beauty routine can profoundly transform your skin.

Aromatherapy: what is it?

The word aromatherapy comes from the Greek words “aroma,” meaning aroma or scent, and “therapeia,” meaning treatment or care. Originally, it referred to the use of aromatic plant extracts, particularly essences, hydrosols, and essential oils, for their medicinal properties.  René Maurice Gattefossé was the first to highlight the properties of essential oils . Since then, they have been used to treat minor ailments, but their use has become widespread, including in cosmetics. For the greater pleasure of our senses and the greater well-being of our skin, essential oils naturally find their way into skincare products. They have been meticulously selected for their soothing, purifying, and rebalancing properties . We reveal all about the beauty benefits of aromatherapy .

Aromatherapy and essential oils

Essential oils are plant extracts obtained through steam distillation. From the flower, root, bark, fruit, or aromatic plant, a highly concentrated essential oil of active molecules is obtained. For example, 4,000 kg of rose petals are needed to obtain 1 kg of Damask rose essential oil, and 150 kg of true lavender flowering tops are required to extract 1 kg of true lavender essential oil. Essential oils have been used for millennia, and steam distillation is a process known since antiquity.

Essential oils and the skin

They are becoming increasingly popular in spa and at-home skincare routines. Their active ingredients quickly penetrate the skin barrier and are absorbed, working gently to deliver their beneficial properties. The molecules in essential oils can act synergistically: combining essential oils allows them to work together and enhance each other’s effects. For example, at Mary Cohr, the trio of sage, lavandin, and rosemary (known as Vector T) is used in skincare products such as the Universal Vital Essence, as well as in spa treatments. Vector T enhances the effectiveness of makeup removal and optimizes the penetration of subsequent skincare products. It is also found in the massage creams used in the CatioVital Double Youth and CatioVital Lifting rituals, and in the Aromatic Beauty Treatment.
